Technical Report: Migrant health series. Background note to the ECDC Report on migration and infectious diseases in the EU

The ECDC Report on migration and infectious diseases in the EU is composed of a series of disease-specific documents presenting data analysis, evidence summary, interpretation and guidance on interventions in the field of migration and selected infectious diseases.

This background note complements and introduces the disease-specific reports. It provides an overview of migration and infectious diseases in the EU and a brief summary of issues related to migration and health, and also points out possible areas for future public health research and intervention.

The first disease-specific documents to be published are on HIV/AIDS. Tuberculosis and vaccine preventable diseases (measles) will follow and other diseases will be considered for inclusion in the future. The project also includes an overview of projects related to health and migration/ethnic minorities funded by the European Health Programme 2003-2008.

Possible target readership: policymakers, public health experts, experts in migrant issues.

Technical Report: Migrant health series. Epidemiology of HIV and AIDS in migrant communities and ethnic minorities in EU/EEA countries

This document describes the burden of HIV infection in migrant populations and its contribution to the epidemiology of HIV in the period 1999-2006. Data from ECDC/former EuroHIV were used, globally and for each EU/EEA country, and absolute numbers and percentages of cases of AIDS and HIV were examined by geographical origin and year, stratified by sex and transmission categories.

This report is part of the ECDC Report on migration and infectious diseases in the EU, a series of documents presenting data analysis, evidence summary, interpretation and guidance on interventions in the field of migration and selected infectious diseases.

Possible target readership: policymakers, public health experts, experts in migrant issues.

Protocols for cohort database studies to measure influenza vaccine effectiveness in the EU and EEA Member States

Changes in the genetic makeup of the influenza virus call for new vaccines on an annual basis. Assessing and monitoring the effectiveness of pandemic vaccines is essential once they become available. Although strain-specific pandemic vaccines are expected to be effective, the early availability of vaccine effectiveness estimates could make a valuable contribution to the success of vaccination campaigns.

The generic study protocols presented here summarise all relevant methodological issues related to conducting cohort database studies aimed at measuring vaccine effectiveness for seasonal and A(H1N1)v influenza. All protocols were developed as part of an ECDC project entitled I-MOVE (Influenza Monitoring of Vaccine Effectiveness). Based on these protocols, a number of specific studies will be conducted during the current influenza A(H1N1)v virus pandemic.

Possible target readership: public health officials, policymakers, clinicians.
