Alcohol

The prevalence of alcohol consumption in the past 30 days in the population 17 to 84 years was 75 percent in 2022. The prevalence has remained fairly stable since 2011, but decreased a couple of percentage points during the pandemic, and has not since recovered.

Among students in grades 9 and 11, the prevalence of drinking in the past 30 days was 18 and 45 percent, respectively, in 2022.

Per capita consumption was about 8.8 litres of pure alcohol per person 15+ years in 2022. The prevalence has decreased since 2011, particularly during the pandemic, but returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2022. Per capita consumption consists of registered on- and off-premise sales, and unregistered acquisitions (e.g. alcohol purchased online or abroad).

The prevalence of hazardous consumption among persons 16 to 84 years was 15.6 percent in 2022. The prevalence has decreased since 2011, but not in all groups. Hazardous consumption has decreased among men and persons 16 to 29 years, but has remaind stable among women, and has increased among persons 65+ years.
