This report describes the monitoring systems for influenza in use during the winter season of 2019–2020 and the results of both epidemiological and virological surveillance. Data are also compared to previous influenza seasons. The report has been prepared for the World Health Organization (WHO)

The programme builds on cooperation between clinical microbiological laboratories and the Public Health Agency of Sweden, and complements the epidemiological surveillance conducted through SmiNet and other non-microbial surveillance systems.

According the Communicable Diseases Act and the Communicable Diseases Ordinance a number of diseases are notifiable in Sweden.

One of the most important tasks of the Public Health Agency of Sweden is to continuously follow the epidemiological situation concerning communicable diseases, especially those included in the Communicable Diseases Act.

The aim of public health reporting is to provide a broad description of the state of public health in Sweden. It contains analyses of both the prevalence of diseases and of our lifestyles and living conditions, which to a large extent affect the development of public health.
