EU Reference Laboratories
EU Reference Laboratories (EURLs) in public health are designated by the European Commission to support national reference laboratories in improving diagnostics, testing methods, and surveillance of serious cross-border health threats. The purpose is to promote harmonised approaches and best practices across EU Member States.
Strengthening Public Health Capacity in the EU
As of 1 January 2025, six out of nine EURLs have been established for a seven-year mandate under the EU4Health programme. These laboratories bring together scientific expertise from across the EU to enhance preparedness and enable timely detection and response in the event of infectious disease outbreaks.
Our participation
The Public Health Agency of Sweden participates in three EURLs and coordinates the EURL for emerging, rodent-borne and zoonotic viral pathogens. Through this engagement, Sweden contributes to the development of a coherent and effective public health laboratory system at the EU level.
