Sweden’s national strategy, it’s about life, provides a long-term direction for work in the field of mental health and suicide prevention for the years 2025–2034.

Vision and overarching goals

Vision

The national strategy is based on the vision of “a society that promotes good and equitable mental health across the entire population, where no one should find themselves in such a vulnerable position that suicide is perceived to be the only way out”.

Overarching goals

The vision for the national strategy is supported by four overarching goals that define the key shifts needed during the strategy period:

  1. Improved mental health across the entire population.
  2. Fewer lives lost to suicide.
  3. A reduction in preventable disparities in mental health.
  4. A reduction in the negative consequences of psychiatric conditions.

Objectives

  1. An increased focus on strengthening mental health and wellbeing for individuals and society.
  2. Increased investments in children and youth to ensure good mental health throughout life.
  3. An inclusive and sustainable working life that promotes mental health.
  4. An inclusive society with engaged citizens.
  5. Health and social care that meets the needs of patients and users.
  6. Strengthened suicide prevention efforts.
  7. Increased knowledge in the field of mental health and suicide prevention.
