Recommendations for COVID-19 vaccination
The national guidelines issued by the Public Health Agency of Sweden for COVID-19 vaccination aim to prevent severe disease and death. The guidelines are regularly updated and adjusted in response to changes in the epidemiological situation and the risks associated with COVID-19.
The following recommendations are effective from September 1, 2025.
For whom is vaccination recommended?
The Public Health Agency of Sweden recommends one yearly dose of COVID-19 vaccine, preferably administered during autumn, to
- All individuals aged 75 years and above
- All individuals aged 18 years and above with immunosuppression due to medical treatment or immunosuppressive conditions, such as chronic kidney disease stages 3–5 and Down syndrome (pregnancy and age-related immune decline are not considered immunosuppressive in this context).
- Individuals aged 50-74 with at least one of the following underlying conditions that increase the risk of severe COVID-19:
- Chronic cardiovascular disease, including stroke (excluding hypertension alone).
- Chronic respiratory disease such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or severe, unstable asthma.
- Diabetes mellitus (type 1 and 2).
- Liver failure.
- Chronic kidney disease stages 3–5.
- Conditions that reduce lung volume or respiratory capacity, such as obesity with a BMI 40 or above, neuromuscular conditions, or multiple functional impairments.
- Individuals who are not targeted by the recommendation as per the definition above, but have advanced illness or conditions that impair their health in a way that puts them at risk of severe COVID-19, may be prescribed vaccination by their doctor. Examples of such illnesses may include severe lung disease or pronounced frailty due to extensive comorbidities.
The ages stated refer to the birthday/age in the present year. Recommendations for adults are effective from the day of the 18th birthday.
