De flesta sexuellt aktiva personer smittas någon gång i livet av HPV. Inom screeningen för livmoderhalscancer erbjuds kvinnor HPV-test som visar om det finns en pågående infektion, men dessa tester är inte allmänt tillgängliga i andra sammanhang. Tester för att se vilka HPV-typer man har varit infekterad med tidigare finns inte heller allmänt tillgängliga.
