Traditional leadership in the public health system has often been built on a high level of personal energy and strong commitment to the mission. We believe that the 21st century society needs effective and highly distinguished structures for public health strategic leadership based on high-level skills, commitment and trained competences. It is against this background that the Director-General Sarah Wamala at the Swedish National Institute of Public Health initiated a workshop on Global public health leaders of tomorrow – what is at stake? The workshop was run on 15 May 2013 in collaboration with Rebecca Watson at Brompton Associates in London.
